GORDON JONES
Tonight gives me the opportunity to introduce to you one of the most important members of the ‘backroom staff’ Gordon Jones, without whom this football club would struggle considerably more than it does now.
Gordon is responsible for more jobs than we can list here but among them are; marketing manager, commercial manager, catering, painting, gofer, gateman, cover for absentees, odd jobs, etc., etc., etc. His status is retired!!!
Gordon is married to the lovely Maureen who not surprisingly has the patience of a saint, and who naively thought that when Gordon retired after 30 years service at Gaskells five years ago, she’d be seeing more of him! Gordon is the father of club secretary Mark, and both of them are Leeds United season ticket holders. Mr. Jones senior moved to this area in 1984 and watched the Robins occasionally until 1993 when Mark married the chairman’s daughter Alison, and from then on Gordon has been heavily involved with GHTFC. For the last five years he has taken over all aspects of marketing and advertising which has been a great help to both Mark and the football club.
Gordon was a keen footballer in his youth and indeed still likes the odd kick-about as he proved the other week when heading a ‘Foggy’ cross narrowly wide in a pre-match warm up.
Whilst doing his National Service, he played for the Duke of Wellington Infantry team at both cricket and football and also played for a Cheshire amateur side against a Manchester United Junior team which included many of the Busby Babes, amongst them, Bobby Charlton.
The highlight of Gordon’s time at Harwood was the tremendous FA Cup run this season which was great for the football club and the supporters. His biggest disappointment would have to be the lack of local people willing to give up just a couple of hours a week to help the club. That said, it makes Gordon’s role here even more vital.
Let’s hope that the kind, lovely and warm-hearted Maureen continues to let Gordon ‘play out’ at the Showground
WE NEED HIM!
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK GORDON
