The Robins’ season was a great improvement on the one 12 months earlier and we finished 14th from 22 clubs in the North West Counties 2nd Division. The season began with an extraordinary seven games in fourteen days and finished with nine in nineteen. For the second year running Ashcroft was our leading scorer and once again we were deducted two points for a breach of League rules.
Our full League record was;

The title was won by Ashton United and Flixton were the runners-up. Bacup Borough finished bottom while three more clubs resigned from the Competition, Ford Motors, Nelson and Whitworth Valley.
In the 1st Division, two of our neighbours fought out a great battle to reach the Northern Premier League and Colne pipped Rossendale to the title on goal difference, conceding just 14 goals in 34 games.
Marine won the Lancs. Senior Cup while anther Merseyside club, Kirkby Town, changed their name to Knowsley United. During the next few seasons Knowsley made great strides up the Pyramid and were soon competing in the Northern Premier League Premier Division but attendances were atrocious, vandalism rife, and at the end of the 1996-97 season, they resigned from the League. Co-incidentally, Great Harwood Town were due to play them in the opening round of the FA Trophy in season 97-98 and therefore received a bye to the next stage.
